Why are Regular Dental Hygiene Appointments Important?

The start of any dental treatment plan begins with a thorough examination by one of our dentists. Your examination will include an oral cancer screening and a detailed evaluation of the current oral health including your teeth, gums, and the surrounding tissue. At Lifepath Wellness Dental & Wellness, we use digital x-rays, periodontal probing, and intra-oral photography to determine your current dental health and provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan that is prioritized to treat existing conditions based upon our findings.

What Happens at a Dental Hygiene Appointment?

When you visit Lifepath Dental & Wellness, there is a lot to accomplish in a regular dental hygiene appointment.

Dental hygienists clean your teeth both above the gumline, which is known as “scaling,” and below the gumline, which is known as “root planing.” We use both traditional hand scalers and ultrasonic scaling tools (that use super-fast vibrations) to remove deposits, depending on your scaling and root planing needs.

Also, your Lifepath Dental & Wellness hygienist will perform several important oral health checks at your hygiene appointment, including:

  • A complete periodontal assessment.
  • Checking for gum recession.
  • Checking for the presence of gingivitis.
  • Polishing your teeth to remove any surface stain.
  • Fluoride treatment (if chosen) to help prevent cavities from forming and to harden enamel in areas that may be weak.
  • An extra-oral exam at least once a year to check the head, neck and jaw areas for confirmation of health.
  • An intra-oral exam to check the gum tissues, tongue, and lips for confirmation of health.
  • Digital x-rays (when needed).

You’ll also have an exam completed by your dentist and have a chance to ask any questions you might have.

What is Hygiene Therapy?

Our dental hygiene program follows a strict standard of care to record, assess, and evaluate your oral health condition at every visit. Working with your dental hygienist, your individual hygiene treatment plan is coordinated to best treat and monitor the health of your teeth and gums. We offer our patients Laser Bacterial Reduction (LBR) to eliminate bacteria in the mouth to create a fresh environment around your teeth and gums. We also reserve your dental hygiene visits in advance, to best fit your schedule.

Root Canal Prevention

The best way to prevent the need for a root canal treatment is by maintaining good oral hygiene, a healthy diet, and taking proper safety measures during sports by using a proper sports mouthguard . Additionally, a tooth becomes vulnerable to deep pulp infections because of the repeated need for dental treatment to the tooth, such as deep fillings.

So, no matter what condition your teeth are in, it is never too late to apply these preventative principles to protect your teeth. The team at Lifepath Wellness Dental in Chestermere are here to help you and advise you on the path to good oral health.

How Often Should I Have a Dental Hygiene Visit?

How often you need to visit Lifepath Dental & Wellness for a hygiene visit depends on several factors. Are your teeth susceptible to excess accumulation of plaque and calculus? Do you have crowded teeth, fillings or missing teeth? These are all cases which can lead to increased plaque buildup and require more frequent visits.

Some patients require a traditional dental hygiene schedule, while others require a more frequent schedule. While most people come in for dental hygiene appointments every six months, some people may benefit by coming in every 3-4 months, while others might only require a hygiene appointment every 9 or even every 12 months.

Our dental hygienists at Lifepath Dental & Wellness will be happy to advise you how often you should have a dental cleaning based on your specific individual needs.

Minimizing Sensitivity during Dental Hygiene Treatments

If you have experienced sensitivity in your teeth from past hygiene appointments, taking ibuprofen in advance of your hygiene appointment can help alleviate this. If you are experiencing heightened sensitivity, then dental freezing may be an option that should be discussed to deal with your discomfort issues.
